Frequently Asked Questions

What training do you have?

All dietitians working for Sunrise Nutrition have obtained 40 hours of training in “Treating the Dieting Casualty” (ever considered yourself a dieting casualty?), our How to Eat Peacefully program.

Our entire team of dietitians has advanced training in treating eating disorders and we meet regularly with supervisors to discuss best practices for treating our valuable clients. Paula is working toward the Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS) credential (formerly the CEDRD credential).

Some of our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists have completed the Be Body Positive model training and are Licensed Be Body Positive Facilitators. This adds an extra layer to the ways that we can help people make peace with food & body.

We all complete hours & hours of continuing education to maintain our credentials. At Sunrise Nutrition we value learning, and all of our dietitians are interested in seeking answers for challenging topics. Things change as science evolves (although it’s more slowly than the news about nutrition would indicate), and so does our practice. We believe in continual training to be the best for you!

If you’d like to learn more about our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists you can do that on our provider page.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered Dietitians (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) are the same thing! We complete a minimum of a bachelors degree in science and nutrition and use evidence-based approaches in their practices. Many of us also hold Masters degrees in nutrition too.

Something surprising clients learn is there is no regulation over the individual term “nutritionist,” therefore, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist - even if they have no formal training in science or nutrition. Be careful when seeking nutrition services and make sure you’re informed about the practitioner’s education and abilities.

When you see the RD or RDN credentials you know the practitioner has significant education in food, body and nutrition.

What’s an anti-diet dietitian?

Anti-diet dietitians understand research shows 80-95% of people gain weight lost while restricting eating back - plus more. (This usually happens 2-3 years after the weight loss.) We know diets, life-style change, eating in moderation, clean eating, wellness diets, and all the other code words for food restriction don’t work long term.

Anti-diet dietitians also know there are times when special diets are necessary. We call this Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). When a person receives a medical diagnosis an anti-diet dietitian will support dietary changes with science-based recommendations to prevent complications and improve healthfulness. But first, our dietitians at Sunrise Nutrition consider your eating competence. People who don’t have high eating competence struggle to maintain dietary changes aimed at physical health.

What’s eating competence? Here’s the short answer, eating competence is being positive, comfortable and flexible with eating, as well as matter-of-fact and reliable about getting enough to eat of enjoyable and nourishing foods. There are four quadrants to eating competence, which your dietitian can help you understand in your session.

Peace with food is always our primary concern! Those who feel peaceful about eating are shown by research to eat a variety of foods & bring themselves along naturally with nutrition.
